The Gorillaz were up for several awards at the close of 2001 and throughout 2002. Obviously they could not appear 'in person' (though Jamie and Damon did collect awards on one occasion, breaking the illusion slightly) but, as many bands have done before, they sent a recorded acceptance speech on video apologising for not being able to make it, that was then broadcast at the ceremony. The video was of course an animated short of the Gorillaz. Shots from the speech appear above.
