DARE (DFA Remix)
|
At an uncomfortable 12 minutes and 2 seconds, there are still a few reasons why
you’d want to listen to the DFA remix of "DARE". The fact that it uses only
Damon Albarn and Shaun Ryder’s vocals (Damon’s are decidedly a lot funkier than
Rosie’s, which dominate the album version), not to mention it’s hook-heavy
funk-style bassline, make this cut one of the more inventive remixes Gorillaz
has seen (not including the complete overhauls seen in the Spacemonkeys
dub-extravaganza refixes). The mood of the track is perhaps a bit darker in
DFA’s take than in the album’s version, and the actual concept behind it (the
well thought-out arrangement, the cowbell-driven beat, the mash-up of vocal
progression) is of a quality which lands in an entirely different ballpark than
the Soulwax remix. All of these elements carry it along just fine for about the
first seven minutes. But then, as far too many dance mixes do, the track goes
off the deep end. You can start to feel it when the melody-less rocket take-off
noises fire up, and by the time the beat cuts out, leaving behind only ambient,
celestial noise, the DFA remix is treading knee-deep in some really ugly,
over-used club-hopping muck. After the bright spots from the first few minutes,
this is all so anti-climatic, you wonder if perhaps someone mistakenly tacked on
a bunch of sampling leftovers in post-production. I suggest you get yourself an
audio-editing program like cubase, and do this track a huge fucking favor: fade
it out at the seven minute mark. And, DFA? We’ll just look the other way pretend
the second half was an accident. - Wazawaii |
