The second single released from Plastic Beach. Or was it? Even in the digitial download age, where singles are often released without a physical format to buy, whether Superfast Jellyfish received a single release of any sort is controversial amongst fans.
The song received a play on Zane Lowe's radio show on 25th February and was uploaded to Gorillaz' official Youtube channel directly after (the only other track from Plastic Beach not accompanied by a video to get the same upload to Gorillaz' official Youtube was White Flag, a little later), being only the second track from Plastic Beach to be heard by the general public. Soon after, Miles Leonard, Parlophone boss (Gorillaz' UK record label) stated that Superfast Jellyfish would be the second single off the album, in an interview. A CD promo was issued, and after that, a remixes CD promo. Further remixes were also released around the same time (nine using the official remix parts eventually emerged, see below). Also, in the music press (e.g. Music Week) dates of May 10th and May 17th were given at different times as the 'release date' of the single in the UK (nothing related to the single happened on either of these dates).
Fans speculated that the single had been cancelled, however, it may be that this kind of promo only release of the single was what had been envisaged all along. Work on the On Melancholy Hill video had begun as early as January, so it cannot have been that a video had ever been intended for a release in or around May. Finally, the Gorillaz official website called On Melancholy Hill the 'third single' off Plastic Beach, in an official news posting when the iTunes LP for that single was released.
The song did not gain major radio play and was not playlisted by any major stations.
No video was made or released for the song, although what was termed a 'visual accompaniment' (on Gorillaz' official Youtube) was released as part of the Plastic Beach iTunes LP, and later uploaded to the Gorillaz Youtube account. This was a low budget video, directed by James Coore, featuring a man dancing in pyjamas and interacting with CGI jellyfish..
Finally, the song, as an mp3, was included for those people who paid £1.50 to gain access to the PC/Mac version of the 'Escape To Plastic Beach' game (the full game was already available for free for those who had the Plastic Beach Experience Edition, and the download song was not included with the iTunes store versions of the game)

Every source (whether they say they have the remix or the remix instrumental) has the track as above, i.e., no vocals. It could be that SBTRKT only released the instrumental version of the remix in the end. Or it could be that his remix just had no vocals, and some people labelled it the instrumental assuming there was one with vocals on.

Superfast Jellyfish (The Last Skeptik Remix) [3:06]
Status: Not approved
Released: As an mp3 / radio play
Notes: Released along with the On Melancholy Hill remix by The Last Skeptik. i.e. may have been done after the main batch of Superfast Jellyfish remixes.
